With 1,536 pages, 4,000 photos and illustrations, and a meticulous research effort to retrace all the editions of the 24 Heures du Mans, this comprehensive work on the world's greatest endurance race lives up to its promise.
The talented authors Christian Moity, Jean Marc Tessere and Alain Bienvenu have collected thousands of documents and unearthed rare photos left in the attic of a house.
But the results are worthy of this titanic task. Jean Marc Teissedre, head of iconography, has been able to find photos of all the cars that have taken part in this event since 1923, including those that did not.
The photos, 80% of them previously unpublished, came from the archives of the ACO, press agencies and race enthusiasts and spectators, who were proud and happy to take part in this project. Nevertheless, some years, such as 1934 and 1935, or the editions of the early 1950s, were difficult to portray.
The authors have covered every single edition through the highlights, the exploits, the dramas, but also the changes in rules, the evolution of the circuit, the grandstands, and its implications on the life of Le Mans and its surroundings.
The reader will rediscover in some photos the 'friendly' atmosphere that existed in the garages 'occupied' by the teams in the neighbouring towns. In 1970, for example, a Porsche 917 with Gulf livery was being assembled in what looked like a demolition workshop. A far different thing from today's air-conditioned garages with screens and computers!
From the so-called production cars of the first editions to the LM P1 prototypes with turbo-diesel engines, the entire evolution of cars came to the Sarthe to showcase the experience of so many manufacturers.
The Roll of Honour of the 24 Hours of Le Mans includes the most prestigious brands in automotive history, from Chenard & Walcker and Peugeot to Lorraine Dietrich, Bentley, Alfa Romeo, Lagonda, Bugatti, Delahaye, Ferrari, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin, Ford, Porsche, Matra, Mirage, Renault, Rondeau, BMW, Audi and Peugeot.
Special edition of 24 Heures du Mans 1923-2010, with each of the three tomes housed in a single slipcase.
