There are watersheds in everyone's existence. Even if, as Alex Zanardi says, "I'm still me, with legs or without", it is true that life changes, and you have to learn to deal with it in other ways.
Alex's watersheds are engraved in the collective memory. The first, at the Lausitzring circuit in September 2001, "with my car breaking in two, and me with it", was just the dramatic prelude to what he would turn into "the greatest opportunity of my life".
The second, in June 2020, is even more vivid in everyone's hearts, like a shiver running up the spine: on the roads of the Val d'Orcia, his handbike collides with a lorry on a bend. It was the start of a new and exhausting marathon, the most challenging and difficult ever.
The author, Claudio Arrigoni, is a journalist and a friend of Alex Zanardi's for over twenty years. He has covered seven editions of the summer Paralympics and five of the winter one.
Together, on 12 June 2020, they held their last public meeting before the accident, to present Obiettivo Tricolore, the relay race with the Paralympic athletes of Obiettivo3.
