In the early 1960s, the boom of Italian-style GTs exploded. Unlike the more noble and prestigious Ferraris, Maseratis and Lamborghinis, they used big 8V engines taken from American production models mounted on lightweight European chassis to achieve high performance.
Among them was the Apollo GT, the brainchild of two American businessmen Newton Davis and Milt Brown; to realize this project they founded International Motor Cars in Oakland, California.
Based on a design by Franco Scaglione and powered by a powerful small-block V8 from Buick, it had a lightweight aluminium body mounted on a tubular steel chassis.
Despite all the features required of cars in its class, the Apollo was not a success: a total of 88 were built between 1961 and 1966, including 76 coupés, 11 convertibles and a single 2+2 coupé prototype.
Apollo GT: the American Ferrari traces a historical and photographic profile of the car, with 138 pages and 87 photos and illustrations, in colour and b/w.
