Carrera Panamericana: the Mexican road race. In its day, it was the longest, fastest and probably the craziest international motor race ever organised.
A world circuit race alongside Le Mans, Mille Miglia, Nüburgring and Tourist Trophy, most drivers considered it the most beautiful and the worst of all.
From 1950 to 1954, it attracted ten million spectators along a course of almost 2,000 miles, with deserts where the fastest cars could reach 180 mph, and mountain passes that required the use of first gear.
The Carrera Panamericana influenced design and marketing, from Michigan to Modena. Ferrari designed and named a model specifically for this competition. The Lincoln emerged as a high-performance sedan and Porsche's Carrera was named in homage to its victories.
The Pan-Am was so unconventional and glamorous that it caught the attention of the world for an entire week every year. It was one of the last major open-road events, the first in which European and American cars could be matched, and it marked the return of US automakers' support for racing in America.
