Many people know that on 16 December 1945, the Coppa Mergellina was held in Naples, Italy's first post-war motor race.
However, few enthusiasts know that the second race, the Atrani-Ravello hill climb, took place on 3 March 1946, also in Campania.
Starting with these two dates, the book Corse sotto il Vesuvio offers a detailed overview of the car races held in Campania until the 1960s.
They are all road, circuit, uphill and regularity races, in which the most famous champions such as Ascari, Farina, Fangio and Moss were flanked by local drivers less well-known to the public, such as Ruggiero, Sorrentino, Fiordelisi and Moselli.
Similarly, immortal car manufacturers such as Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo were joined by local craftsmen like Paganelli, the Esposito brothers and Monaci.
Shortly before the 1970s, the cycle of competition began to gradually die out.
With the limitations due to safety issues, the road courses were no longer fit for purpose. Drivers and fans will be forced to move away from Vesuvius, and the craftsmen will disappear forever.
With the help of more than 600 shots by Riccardo Carbone, legendary Neapolitan photographer, Massimo Nobile tells the story of the golden years of Campania's racing, highlighting not only the actors, even the most unknown, but also the magnificent scenery where these races took place. These images will remain unique in the panorama of Italian motor racing.
