Formerly the largest motorbike factory in the world, the DKW plant in Zschopau was completely dismantled by the Soviets in 1945.

However, production resumed in 1947, in particular that of the DKW 125 RT model, the patent for which had been made free as part of the repair of German war damage and initially offered under the IFA brand name.

In 1952, VEB Motorradwerk Zschopau was formed and from 1956 all two-wheelers carried the newly created MZ brand name.

Production of the first model continued until 1962 and ended with 310,800 units produced, 64,000 of which were exported.

With the start of series production of the new ES 250 and ES 175 models, the MZ motorbike manufacturer achieved steadily increasing production figures until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990.

Frank Rönicke documents the history of the great East German brand in this book and describes all the most important models and series since 1955 and their use in road racing.
