Ford officially debuts in Europe with the Ford GT at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1964. Henry Ford II launched the challenge to Maranello and wants to win the French classic. Between Enzo Ferrari and the American giant there was a long negotiation about the purchase of the Maranello factory. Enzo Ferrari, almost ready to sign the sale of the plant to Ford, has a proud moment, has second thoughts and canceled the deal. The managerial staff of Detroit is not used to losing, especially with a small Italian manufacturer, and gives life to the great challenge between the world's largest automobile industry and the small manufacturer who makes the fastest and envied cars of the world. To beat Ferrari have to defeat it on his battleground: racing, and Ford does not skimp no resources to get in order, but American cars are still immature, need to be developed properly. The 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1964 was won by the Ferrari 275 P of Guichet and Vaccarella, which precedes the 330 P of Bonnier-Hill and Surtees-Bandini. The AC Cobra took fourth place with Dan Gurney and Bob Bondurant. The Ford GT of 4.2 liters that have debuted at the Sarthe circuit, have not reached the finish line, but the first act of the great challenge began.
