Gilco epitomizes an outstanding skill at designing and building, blending the engineering concept maximum structural dependability with lightness and aesthetic sense. With the brand he created, Gilberto Colombo brought innovations in many fields โ from racing cars and bicycles to sailboats, from interior design to industrial machinery โ during what was perhaps Italyโs most prolific period, characterized by a remarkable creativity and industrial growth.
Through the 1950s, he played a leading role in the founding of Ferrari and in its first decade, as well as in the success of many other start-up car companies. During the 1960s and 1970s he worked at the revamping of the Star Class sailboat design, while during the 1980s he was instrumental in creating the top-range models of the Italian cycling industry.
For these reasons Colombo is well known to industrial design, yachting, high-end bicycle and car racing enthusiasts.
The Gilco brand is still active today through the historical archive that preserves Gilberto Colomboโs original drawings, and more importantly through technical research aiming to further develop the skills and knowledge accumulated in decades of design activity, and in the fifty years of operations of Trafiltubi โ the manufacturing company founded by Colombo.
Faithful to its original purpose and to Colomboโs motto "A tube will always be true", today the company continues to produce highly technological and often custom-made tubes.
On the occasion of Gilcoโs 70th anniversary, which not by accident is shared by Ferrari, this book presents an important survey of past projects illustrated by a wealth of historical and iconographic material.
