From Formula Grand Prix racetracks to sabotage actions in Nazi-occupied France. The pen of Joe Saward, an important name in sports journalism on the other side of the Channel, gives us a true and fascinating story, which unfolds between the roaring years of the first Grand Prix, with their load of glitter, triumphs, and tragedies on track, and the nightmare of the Second World War.

Two very distant situations that have one thing in common: the presence of a trio of drivers who, having hung up their helmets, decided to play their part in the conflict by working behind the scenes and inflicting as much damage as possible on the German occupants, by organising attacks and sabotage.

All in accordance with the line laid down by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, creator of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) for which these pilots worked, and whose documents remained secret for decades.

An organisation covered by absolute secrecy, even frowned upon by MI6, the "official" Secret Service, and which, after the conflict, contributed to the birth of the American CIA.

Such a context requires a good dose of secrecy and mystery on the part of those who work in it: characteristics that accompanied for the whole of his life, and even beyond, the mysterious 'W Williams', the driver who first decided to give his own contribution, later involving the other two.

Winner of the first Monte Carlo Grand Prix in 1929, "W Williams" was a mystery for his rivals. Few of them knew exactly who he was and, living permanently in France, he was virtually unknown in the United Kingdom, his true country of origin.

He was a character with a fascinating life, and a great sportsman who, with his wife Yvonne, formed a fantastic dance couple, award-winning at the dancing parties in the Principality of Monaco.
