The Salone dell'Automobile di Torino, or Salone di Torino, was Italy's main automobile exhibition and one of the most important in the world. The first edition, called the Mostra di Automobili, was held in the Palazzina delle Belle Arti at Valentino, from 21 to 24 April 1900, the first automobile exhibition organised in Italy.

That first edition was followed by many others, with exhibitors arriving from beyond the borders; it thus became a tradition to celebrate the new models launched by the world's leading car manufacturers, who met in the Piemontese capital every May.

In 1959, since the exhibition space was no longer enough, Pavilion No. 5 was built by engineer Riccardo Morandi, considered one of the most prestigious works of Italian post-World War II rationalism due to its architectural features. In 1984, the Show moved to the exhibition spaces of the former Fiat plant at Lingotto.

Many cars, especially Italian ones from FIAT and Lancia, were officially unveiled here, including the Fiat 1400 and Fiat 126, the Lancia Appia and Lancia Thema, just to name some of the most successful models in the history of Italian manufacturers.
