A car with an incredible history and guardian of many secrets. A car that bears the name "Alcinoo", the same as one of the most beautiful royal thoroughbreds housed at the Scuderie del Quirinale in the late 1930s.
It was, moreover, King Victor Emmanuel III who wanted the legendary Fiat Torpedo 2.8 convertible built for high representation, designed by ‘Pinin’ Farina and which became the leader of only six examples registered to the House of Savoy in 1939.
In those dramatic years, the car was also often used by Benito Mussolini, so much so that the first guest on board was Adolf Hitler. Sovereigns, heads of state, dictators, prime ministers and pontiffs sat in its seats before it fell into German hands.
With the end of the war and the Monarchy, "Alcinoo" passed into the hands of the Presidents of the Republic: Enrico De Nicola, Luigi Einaudi and Giovanni Gronchi used her, hosting personalities such as Evita Peron, Harry Truman and Charles de Gaulle.
It was Antonio Segni who finally ordered its disposal in 1962. So it was that, eight years later, entrepreneur Raffaele Bacelliere discovered it forgotten and dusty in the Rome branch of Fiat, taking it with him to the province of Varese. Now his son Gabriele Bacelliere is giving the Torpedo a new lease of life and an event with Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia on board has re-established the threads of an extraordinary story.
L'ultima macchina del Re: Storia di Alcinoo, la Fiat Torpedo che ha accompagnato sovrani e presidenti: a journey to be retraced step by step, amid memories and photographs, reliving in the Torpedo's journey also the parable of the Italy of the past.
