After four long journeys on a Vespa through 134 countries, after more than 250,000 kilometres on his two wheels, Giorgio Bettinelli decided to start a new life in China in 2004.
He buys a house on the left bank of the Mekong and gets married. It seems like the start of a more sedentary, or at least quieter, season of life. Instead, the demon of movement is lurking again.
The fifth journey begins in May 2006. This time it is a journey in a single country, but it touches upon all thirty-three geographical realities that make up the immense Chinese mosaic: an All China Tour on two wheels in which, with irony, affability, and timely annotations, Bettinelli plunges the reader into the great question mark represented by today's China.
From tiny provincial villages to immense city construction sites, from bumpy roads to ultra-modern motorway hubs, from boundless deserts to Western-style shopping malls.
Eighteen months, 39,000 kilometres, to meet new rich people and peasants, bureaucrats and beautiful women, old and young, to feel something of the infinite flavours and colours, sounds and silences that cadence everyday life in the lands of the ancient Celestial Empire.
