Giovanni Canestrini, writer and sports journalist, was one of the founders of Mille Miglia, conceived in his home in December 1926, with Franco Mazzotti, Aymo Maggi and Renzo Castagneto.

In 1924, the director of Gazzetta dello Sport, Emilio Colombo, called him to write the motoring section, and he immediately became well known to the public for his passionate reports, always studded with competent technical analyses and knowledgeable behind-the-scenes stories.

The same passion he lavished on many articles and books dedicated to the automobile and motorsport. Among them, worthy of mention are Automobilismo sportivo e turistico (1947), Prontuario dell'automobilismo sportivo (1956), Uomini e motori (1957), Storia illustrata dell'auto italiana (1961), Automobilismo (1962), Una vita con le corse (1962), La favolosa Targa Florio (1966) and Mille Miglia (1967, 1990).

This two-volume work, Le grandi macchine sportive italiane, written with Gianni Rogliatti, was published in 1965.
