It was 1948 when Maria Teresa De Filippis, then 22 years old, won her first race, ten kilometers from Salerno to Cava de 'Tirreni aboard a Fiat 500.
In 1954 she finished second in the Italian sports car championship, attracting Ernesto Maserati's attention.
He took part in some endurance and uphill races, before landing privately in Formula 1 in 1958, on a Maserati 250F.
The Italian tried to qualify for the Monaco Grand Prix without success, but had another chance at SPA Francorchamps, Belgium, where she finished tenth.
Also that year Maria Teresa started in two other Grands Prix, Portugal and Italy, and in both cases gave up the engine of her car.
