Even 50 years after its launch in 1967, the NSU Ro 80 remains a unique phenomenon on the world car scene like few others.
Hardly any other car combines innovative and original design with extraordinary technology.
Claus Luthe, later chief designer at BMW, created a shape that still impresses today with its timeless elegance and enviable aerodynamics.
The exclusive Wankel engine and advanced safety features make this car unique and highly desirable.
However, the downsides should not be ignored: NSU was slow to come to terms with the design disadvantages of the Wankel engine, which permanently damaged the reputation of this technology, and ultimately that of the Ro 80.
While test drivers were enthusiastic about the safety, ride comfort and style, customers reported frequent engine damage and excessive fuel consumption - over 20 litres per 100 km.
Klaus Arth illustrates the Ro 80 in all its aspects and traces the history from the first sketches to the end of production in 1977.
The text is completed by many archive images, some from the original brochures.
