Lilli Bertone, Ermelinda (Lilli) Cortese was born in 1935 in Alessandria, Italy, the second daughter of a wealthy family. After obtaining her diploma in accountancy, she worked in a bank and in 1966 married the automobile industrialist Nuccio Bertone, becoming his wife, friend, and confidant.
In 1997 Nuccio died suddenly, but he had already made his wife Lilli promise to run the factory at least until 2012, the centenary of its foundation. Lilli Bertone kept her promise.
