Engineer, designer, inventor, record-man, motorbike and car driver. Piero Taruffi was all this and perhaps even more.

An inimitable sequence of speed records with the Gilera 500 "Rondine", which he himself designed with a fairing to make the most of its aerodynamics. His passion for "high-speed driving" led him to race and win everywhere, on two and four wheels: in cars with Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Cisitalia, on motorbikes with the Norton 500 and with "his" Gilera Rondine.

With the Tarf "bisiluro" - and later with the Maserati-powered Tarf II - Taruffi racked up record after record of speed between 1948 and 1954, speeding at 300 km/h on the tried and tested Bergamo-Brescia motorway, and then on the SS 7 state road, the so-called "fettuccia di Terracina", and then again on the French track of Monthléry: his "bisiluro" had become part of the motor racing legend.

And several motor racing competitions: Formula 1 with Ferrari, Maserati and Vanwall between 1950 and 1956; the Targa Florio with Lancia, the Susa-Moncenisio with Cisitalia.

And again - again with Ferrari - the Mexican Carrera, which earned him the nickname of 'silver fox'. The Mille Miglia was missing from his list of honours.

He started from Brescia on 11th May 1957 at the wheel of a Ferrari 4000 for the 24th Mille Miglia. He finally won it. And it was, as promised, his last triumph.

This small but precious book tells us all this, with a list at the end of the hundred and sixty-four races in which Piero Taruffi was a protagonist.
