In 1953, 70 years ago, Porsche redefined the concept of a sportscar with a small capacity engine with the launch of the new 550 on the race tracks, first as a Coupé, which was followed, with a customer-racing approach in mind, by the Spyder model.

In the latter configuration, the 550 would play a key role in the sports car revolution of the 1950's, setting new standards in terms of handling and adding victories in the main events of the time. It was both a racing and a marketing success, and it has undoubtedly added to the strengthening of Ferdinand Porsche's brand image in the difficult context of the post-war period.

In Portugal, this model had its clientele, in a proportion which would exceed the normal assessment of these special versions. In 1955, two examples arrived in Portugal, with chassis numbers #550038 and #550039, respectively for the Marquês de Fronteira, D. Fernando De Mascarenhas, and for Joaquim Filipe Nogueira.

Their arrival in the country would change the motor racing scene in its class (engine capacity up to the 1500 cc), but, in fact, their success was limited by the small number of events held in Portugal, with only two or three circuit races each year.
