Giovanni Canestrini, writer and sports journalist, was one of the founders of Mille Miglia, conceived in his home in December 1926, with Franco Mazzotti, Aymo Maggi and Renzo Castagneto.
In 1924, the director of Gazzetta dello Sport, Emilio Colombo, called him to write the motoring section, and he immediately became well known to the public for his passionate reports, always studded with competent technical analyses and knowledgeable behind-the-scenes stories.
The same passion he lavished on many articles and books dedicated to the automobile and motorsport. Among them, worthy of mention are Automobilismo sportivo e turistico (1947), Prontuario dell'automobilismo sportivo (1956), Uomini e motori (1957), Automobilismo (1962), Una vita con le corse (1962), Le grandi macchine sportive italiane (1965), La favolosa Targa Florio (1966) and Mille Miglia (1967, 1990).
This volume, Storia illustrata dell'auto italiana, co-authored with Felice Dessi and Mario Pagano, was published in 1961.
