From the most humble Fiat to the most exclusive Maserati, the Italian coachbuilders practised their art and demonstrated their talent on a huge range of cars in the years following the Second World War. From this proliferation of creative ideas, both technical and artistic, some prestigious marques would emerge – Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati and Alfa Romeo – and stand above the likes of Abarth, Cisitalia, Nardi, Siata and Stanguellini. The coachbuilders – Bertone, Ghia, Pinin Farina, Vignale and Zagato – would change direction and produce cars in series, leaving behind Balbo, Boano, Farina, Moretti and Motto, while the first independent designers emerged – Mario Revelli de Beaumont, Giovanni Michelotti and Franco Scaglione. Xavier de Nombel and Christian Descombes have combined forces to produce this exciting account.
