In the beginning, BMW Motorsport was just a small division with eight members, including founder Jochen Neerpasch, a former BMW driver with extensive motorsport experience.
At the time of its foundation in May 1972, the company was called Motorsport GmbH, which is why many people still identify it with that name today.
Motorsport was intended by the Bavarian company as a back-up for its road and racing sports cars, given the great success of its models on both fronts.
The activities of BMW's sports division, initially limited to racing, led the way in the late 1970s, extending to the development and production of a new range of high-performance cars, their design and development supported by the lessons of racing.
Recognizable by the M brand stripes, these models transcended the sporting character and technological image of some products in the Bavarian range to become references in the eyes of enthusiasts.
The BMW Motorsport division has also made a name for itself in all disciplines of motorsport.
