An exciting book dedicated to a legendary rally: the Liège-Rome-Liège, which began in 1931 and ended in the last few years with a different formula and name: the 82H, 84H, 86 H and then the 96 H at the Nurburgring.
Year by year, you will find an account of every single edition, with images from the time. It features the names of famous drivers or who would become so: Jacky Ickx, Olivier Gendebien, Vic Elford, Clarck (Roger), Pat Moss, Schlesser, Consten, Larousse, Waldegaard, Lucien Bianchi, Willy Mairesse, Therier, Vernaeve, Aaltonen and many others.
The race took place along open roads over an average distance of 3,500 km without stopping (sometimes more than 5,000 km, as in 1959): start on Wednesday at 11.00 p.m. from Spa and return to the same place on Sunday at around 4.00 p.m.
The race in August 1939 was the last major rally event before the Second World War. The Belgian Ginet Trasenster in a Bugatti and the Frenchman Jean Trevoux in a Hotchkiss finished tied for first place, beating the German teams shortly before their countries were invaded.
From 1961 to 1964, the race route was modified to become Liège-Sofia-Liège. This change reflected the wish of the organisers - the Royal Motor Union of Liège - to diversify the route and to find traffic-free roads.
From 1965 to 1971, the competition was held at the Nürburgring due to the refusal of some countries to allow their territory to be crossed. The race lasted 82 hours, rising to 96 hours in its last edition.
