In a motorsport world studded with Italian champions such as Lodovico Scarfiotti and Mike Parkes, Lorenzo Bandini was certainly one of the most loved and acclaimed drivers in the mid-1960s.
His achievements include victories in the Daytona 24 Hours and the Monza 1000 km in 1967, both with the Ferrari 330 P4. The same year, Bandini died on the Montecarlo circuit.
The chronicle of those last days and hours of the great champion are told in this small, passionate and precious book, published in 1967, by a true witness of the events, Franco Lini, at that time sports director of Scuderia Ferrari.
On lap 82, the tragedy struck: coming out of the tunnel Bandini, probably exhausted from all the energy spent up to that moment, arrived at the Chicane at an unusually high speed. His Ferrari 312 crashed into a mooring bollard on the quay, took off and fell over, overturning and catching fire.
The stewards arrived and put out the fire, but those minutes in which the wreckage of his Ferrari was engulfed in flames were devastating.
The driver was extracted alive but in a desperate condition and immediately hospitalised. The diagnosis left room only for the power of hope: third degree burns on 90% of the body. The first 24 hours passed and Lorenzo Bandini survived. Another 24 hours passed and the fierce fight to make it through continued. But after another 24 hours, on 10 May, Lorenzo Bandini left the most difficult race of his life.
Everywhere, radio, newspapers and television stations mourned the loss of a great driver and a man loved unconditionally by everyone. Even by Enzo Ferrari.
