This book by Dea Loher focuses on existential issues, investigates the meaning of life when faced with a completely senseless death and presents highly topical images.
Dea Loher connects two plots, both based on real events: a young man is beaten, kicked and then killed by a group of youths during the 2008 carnival in Locarno.
However, the more they try to meticulously reconstruct the crime from the jigsaw puzzle of witness statements, the more confused and complicated what really happened (and why) becomes. Despite the clear evidence, to find the murderer is more difficult than expected. and the crime is only partially expiated.
A friend of the victim's family tries another path: he remembers a wrecked car that has been lying in the bottom of Lake Maggiore for 75 years: a Bugatti Brescia 22, or so it is said. All previous attempts to recover it have failed. And now diving into the depths of its own abyss is an adventure with an uncertain result.
No German-language theatre play has been staged more often and more successfully in her country and around the world (more than 300 replicas, and more than 31 translations in as many countries) than that of Dea Loher. After the acclaimed short story collection Hundskopf (Wallstein 2005), here is Bugatti taucht auf, her first romance.
