With a look back at the early 1970s, this sixth volume in the Car Racing series chronicles the end of an era in which patrons and wealthy enthusiasts maintained racing teams with their personal money, against the progressive establishment of car manufacturers' racing departments or highly specialised divisions.
The race for performance has this price, and the paddocks, hitherto very folkloristic, become accustomed to welcoming real "mercenaries", excited by the adrenalin rush of victory, who do not hesitate to compete as rivals to racing departments of the same powerful and ambitious big car manufacturers.
The fight is increasingly fierce and the stakes ever higher. On the star-studded race tracks, new names are appearing at the top of the list, including Porsche of course, which after numerous attempts finally wins at Le Mans, Ford in road racing with its famous Escort, and the very young manufacturer March, perfect incarnation of British know-how and fighting spirit in motor sport.
The DPPI agency, celebrating its fifth anniversary, continues to encourage its photographers and reporters to travel around the four corners of the world. In addition to Formula 1, sportscars and rallies moved to Indianapolis and Daytona in 1970, in the furore and clamour of American-style motorsport.
Car Racing 1970 has 312 pages. Text in French and English.
