Evening of Thursday, 10 May 1965: the history of Formula 875 Monza, the small training formula officially began. It was wanted by Luigi Bertett, president of ACI Milano and Romolo Tavoni, sports director of the Monza Autodrome and former personal secretary to Enzo Ferrari.
The Trofeo Cadetti, Championship of Formula 875 Monza, has a long history on the Italian scene and lasted until the early years of the third millennium; it began in 1965 with the F.875, and continued from 1982 with the next Formula Panda, Formula Fire and Formula Junior Monza.
Over the 18 seasons, the Formula 875 Monza was a great success, races with an average of 80 cars with peaks of over 100–110 entrants, four batteries to reach the final where the best of the lot emerged. This small training single-seater, which initially cost only 875,000 lire, was created around the twin-cylinder engine of the Fiat 500 Giardiniera.
Some of them, growing up, have proved over the years the training value of this category. Michele Alboreto, Arnaldo Bernacchini, Piercarlo Ghinzani, Alberto Colombo, Giovanni Salvati, Giorgio Francia, Luciano Pavesi, Franco Fraquelli, Artico 'Tato' Sandonà, Guido Forti, Paolo Guerci, Massimo Pollini, Lucio Vergani, are some examples.
The book chronicles the era of Formula Monza and motor racing through the stories and interviews of a number of personalities. Many of these began their sporting careers as simple enthusiasts, starting with the small single-seater to then become professionals in the world of motorsport; others took different ways in life, but their experiences in the cockpit of the Formula Monza were crucial to their training.
Through their stories we get a glimpse of what the world of minor motorsport was like from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s. It was a small universe where passion for racing, mechanics and craftsmanship were the lifeblood of this category, and future champions, mechanics, tuners and small manufacturers competed against each other on the Junior track at Monza.
