The phenomenon of the moped, typically Italian, was born after the Second World War, although there were examples before the war, and spread rapidly throughout Europe, especially in France.
The evolution of the moped was extraordinary and the market able to satisfy all user needs. Its socio-economic and mass motorisation function was extremely important.
In 1956 Benelli also entered the crowded moped market, a segment that was growing rapidly following the serious crisis in the motorbike sector due to the spread of utility cars which, at the beginning of the 1960s, took over from medium-sized motorbikes.
In fact, at the XXXIV Bicycle and Motorcycle Exhibition in Milan, the Pesaro-based manufacturer presented a 49cc two-stroke moped with a three-speed gearbox, a pressed sheet metal frame and suspension on both wheels.
Benelli thus began the production of mopeds, which was to prove the winning strategy to compensate the decline in sales of motorbikes with engine capacity above 100cc, producing an incredible range of models over the years. The myth of the "Benellino 3 marce" was born.
I ciclomotori della Benelli: ciclomotori Benelli e MotoBi dagli anni '50 ad oggi has 184 pages fully illustrated. Text in Italian.
