During an eight-month stay in an Indonesian village, Giorgio Bettinelli received an old Vespa as a gift. Until then, he had never ridden a two-wheeler.
It was love at first sight. From that moment on, Bettinelli continued to travel. His 'scooter training' included Indonesia, Bali, Java, and Sumatra.
He then decided to return to Italy to undertake a journey from Rome to Saigon. He left at the end of July 1992 and covered 24,000 kilometres in seven months, on a solitary journey from Italy to Vietnam, passing through Istanbul, Teheran, the Beluchistan desert, Calcutta, Rangoon, and Hanoi.
Giorgio Bettinelli crossed ten countries: Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, Laos and finally Vietnam. From that adventure was born a book full of rough roads, difficult people, hardships but also moments of unbridled freedom, unforgettable landscapes and equally memorable on-the-road encounters.
In the background, a miserable and opulent, tragic and exhilarating Asia. In the foreground, strong and mild, his now inseparable Vespa.
