Ken Tyrrell has been one of the most respected characters in Formula 1 for almost four decades. It was he who discovered Jackie Stewart and won 33 Grand Prix and three world championships as a team owner.
Based on extensive research and interviews with Tyrrell, the famous sports journalist Maurice Hamilton wrote the first authorized biography of "Uncle Ken", as he was fondly called in the environment.
Describes the late advent of the former timber merchant on the motoring scene at the age of twenty-eight. A fleeting success as a pilot in the 1950s, when he ran alongside Stirling Moss in the Formula 500, followed the successful management of a team. From the humble beginnings, he left his mark since the second season in Formula 1, with the victory of the world title and achieving even greater successes with his avant-garde projects and his innovative cars.
The book goes behind the scenes of the team's headquarters in Surrey, where Tyrrell built his six-wheeled F1 prototype in utmost secrecy. He examines his relationships with riders of the caliber of Jody Scheckter, Ronnie Peterson, Jackie Stewart and Martin Brundle. And he tracks Tyrrell's controversial expulsion from the 1984 championship, his need to sell the team, and finally his moving battle against cancer that finally took him away.
The story of Ken Tyrrell offers an exemplary history of changes in the racing environment since the 1960s.
