This industry is important on a quantity level, involving millions of workers. The popularity of its leading actors and the expanse of its products make brands and models well known.
Hence the battle in the sector lends itself to the popularisation of some basic concepts of Marxist science. It presents the concrete development of an imperialist fight where industrial warfare and waging actual war combine and succeed.
It was the first important example of the restructuring crisis of the 1970s. Furthermore, it shows the continuous dynamics, never definitively settled, of alliances and clashes. It exemplifies the unavoidable combination within the capitalist relations of production, of the productive forces’ potential for development and their periodical destruction in crises, when not in wars.
