Conceived in 1940 by Marcel Mennesson, the VéloSolex has for decades imprinted its black image of "bicyclette qui roule toute seule" thanks to Solexine. In town or country, it has left an unforgettable mark on the memory of several generations.
Over the years, thanks to a highly structured dealer network, the VéloSolex quietly evolved, was exported and then built in many other countries. In the 1950s, various accessories were introduced so that there were no two people with the same VeloSolex.
The late 1960s saw a further modernisation of its range, the introduction of colour and an attempt to diversify production. Bicycles and mopeds with cardan shafts, then with chains, complemented the traditional production with rollers.
This diversification increased in the 1970s, until the collapse of Solex's motorised division. But the 3800 had not said its last word and continued to make its way under the Motobécane and then MBK brands.
Today it has become a collector's item or simply a nostalgic vehicle. The VéloSolex is still inextricably linked to the idea of simplicity. Outside its native country, it is a symbol of France and, as such, a true cultural and industrial heritage.
The author of Le VéloSolex de mon père, Franck Méneret, has been collecting mopeds for over forty years. He has an in-depth knowledge of old moped technology, having restored many of them.
His passion for motorised two-wheelers of yesteryear is recognised throughout Europe, because he loves to share it. He is the author of several historical and technical books, much appreciated for their didactic content and wealth of documents.
