The protagonist of this book is not a woman travelling on a motorbike, but the land into which she chooses to enter in an illegal and risky way, as she herself says, to find out how far the legend overlapped reality, but also to eradicate 'prejudices and personal fears' induced by the press and television, which have always been inculcated in people by western governments towards the land in question.
"Land" and not "country", since Lois's approach to Iran is with an off-road motorbike, agile and light, with which she hopes to be able to take off with ease at the first sign of danger.
The treaded wheel actually becomes a symbol of 'digging' beyond the surface, into history, culture, the people she meets, in search of the heart of a perennially misunderstood, contradictory and unexpectedly human nation, fragile but also strong and friendly, cheerful despite the harshness of the landscape and the ayatollahs.
Lois Pryce plunges into it, fearless, armed only with her own vehicle and her own myths, aware that "the combination of autonomy and vulnerability that results from travelling alone on a motorbike is the best way to achieve this kind of intense immersion".
And as often happens, she will emerge a different, more aware person.
