With its fantastic and innovative retractable hardtop, the Mercedes-Benz SLK launched the trend of modern coupe-cabriolets in 1996. With its sporty character, the SLK succeeded in reaching a new, younger, more female and dynamic customers, leveraging the brand's status of reliability. It was an important event in the history of the Stuttgart-based company, eager to renew its image.
The SLK was unrivalled at the time and its launch price made it affordable for being a Mercedes. The commercial success of the concept inspired several manufacturers to take its example. None of them, however, was able to interpret it with the same elegance of Mercedes, which remained technologically advanced for its entire career.
In three generations (types R170, R171 and R172), the compact roadster sold more than 710,000 units. At the same time, it shared its genes to give birth to the Chrysler Crossfire.
The saga of this highly successful sports car is told in Mercedes-Benz, générations SLK, the first one written in French, and illustrated with over four hundred pictures.
