A HUNDRED YEARS OF A DESIGNER WITHOUT FRONTIERS
Giovanni Michelotti is one of the most admired designers in the world. Although he never became a manufacturer, his styling is among the most luminous of the 1950s-70s period, with notable examples even during the pre-war years. Some brands - BMW among them - still consider his influence indelible today.
On the centenary of his birth, the MAUTO of Turin held a comprehensive solo exhibition dedicated to the Turinese designer: Michelotti World: 1921-2021. One hundred years of a designer without frontiers (6 October 2021 - 9 January 2022).
The exhibition continues the trend of MAUTO's major exhibitions on the theme of design, which celebrate the extraordinary contribute of Italian designers to the global automotive industry. A contribution that, in the case of Michelotti, left an indelible mark, in some cases still recognisable today, on the stylistic evolution of the industry's most important brands between the 1950s and 1970s.
The title of the exhibition, 'Michelotti World', expresses both the breadth of the contents on display, the variety of projects realised by the Turinese designer, and the geographical vastness of Michelotti's partnerships, from Japan to the United States, Germany, England, France, Switzerland and, of course, with the main coachbuilders in Italy, first and foremost Vignale
For the first time, a conspicuous part of Michelotti's archive has been exhibited to the public: sketches, technical drawings, shape plans, scale models, together with a selection of his most significant cars.
This volume is the catalogue of the exhibition Michelotti World: 1921-2021. One hundred years of a designer without frontiers and contains the complete selection of works on display accompanied by texts and images.
