This book is about a journey in time and space allowing readers to discover events that have become important turning points in the extraordinary history of the precursors of the automobile: a journey that takes us to ancient arsenals and workshops of people who were able to imagine cutting-edge solutions.
The quest for autonomous movement is a challenge that is lost in antiquity and rooted in the huge world of technology. This story begins with the wheel, which was used by the Sumerians for their chariots as early as the mid-third millennium BC, and ends in 1886, when the first true car was designed and built by Karl Benz.
A number of projects sharing the idea of automobility have seen the light of day over these four millennia, from the self-propelled automatons of Hero of Alexandria (first century AD) to the visionary intuitions of Giovanni Fontana and Leonardo da Vinci in the Renaissance, from the “land boat” built in Japan in 1732 to the bicycle equipped with a steam engine designed in the United States in 1869.
Motus. Preistoria dell'automobile is the catalogue of the homonymous exhibition at the MAUTO in Turin (8 April - 25 September 2022) that allows visitors to make a real journey through space and time to discover the challenges, of considerable complexity, that marked the path that accompanied man up to the invention of the automobile.
The most significant moments of this story, which took place in Europe, Asia and America, underline the international profile of an event characterised by intuitions that occurred in times and places far apart.
