When the last 356, a white convertible, rolled off the production line in Zuffenhausen on 28 April 1965, the event marked the end of an era that had begun sixteen years, ten months and twenty days earlier, on 8 June 1948.

That day, the first 356 saw the light at Gmünd, in the Austrian Alps, where Porsche had moved at the end of the war. In a relatively short time, the first sports car to bear the Porsche name - rising like a phoenix from the ashes of war - reached the pinnacle of its fame.

During the research for this book, Porsche 356 & 550 - Une histoire en images, a unique collection of unpublished Porsche photographs was discovered in the extensive archives of Road & Track magazine.

This material, the work of one of Germany's most important post-war motoring photographers, Kurt Wörner, has become a true 'gold mine' for 356 and 550 enthusiasts.

In addition to this exclusive documentation, numerous photographs from the Porsche archives and other sources have also been included. Some of these pictures, which have already been published, have been reproposed in this edition for reasons of chronological consistency.

More than eighty colour photographs illustrating all the variants of the 356 complete the iconographic documentation; they were made especially for this volume by Henry Rasmussen, renowned automotive photographer and author of the clear and detailed captions that accompany them.

For anyone interested in the history of the marque, Porsche 356 & 550 - Une histoire en images, also after many years, should be a part of the library of every Porsche enthusiast.
