Between the 80s and the 90s, the dream of racing in Formula 1 became reality for BMS Scuderia Italia.
BMS (acronym for Brixia Motor Sport) made its debut in Formula 1 on 3 April 1988 in the first race of the championship, in Brazil: the protagonist was a Dallara F3000 driven by Alex Caffi from Brescia.
The following year, the Scuderia Italia was strengthened, bringing two BMS F189 single-seaters equipped with an upgraded Ford-Cosworth V8 engine (Ford DFR V8 3.5).
In 1989 the drivers were the reconfirmed Alessandro Caffi, who was joined by the Roman driver Andrea De Cesaris. This time the first world points and some satisfactions arrive: in the GP of Montecarlo, Alessandro Caffi conquers an exciting fourth place while in the following GP of Canada Andrea De Cesaris arrives third, gaining the first podium in the history of the team. At the end of the championship, Scuderia Italia finished eighth overall.
After a disappointing season in 1990, BMS Scuderia Italia decided to change engines in 1991. In the absence of official manufacturers willing to supply an engine for the Italian monoposto, the team decides to put its trust in a small English manufacturer. As a result, Dallara F191 was born, equipped with the ten-cylinder Judd GV V10 3.5, a powerful and compact engine that ensured top ten placings and respectable results for that season.
The 1992 season was finally characterized by the arrival of a powerful engine: thanks to a two-year contract with Ferrari, BMS Scuderia Italia secured the Maranello-based 12-cylinder engine developed the previous year (Ferrari 037 V12 3.5) for the next two world championships. Despite a better performing car, good drivers and high expectations, the BMS Dallara F192 does not get decisive results.
On 26 September 1993, in the third last stage of the Formula One championship, in the Portuguese circuit of Estoril, the adventure of BMS Scuderia Italia ended definitively.
This volume reports a brief history of the 1988 and 1989 seasons, and chronicles, Grand Prix after Grand Prix, the 1990 season, with stunning colour photographs.
