Steve McQueen is a household name. The man remains an icon over 40 years after his passing, and his love for all things fast and powerful allows enthusiasts of all ages to connect with him through his movies and the books written about him.
Steve McQueen: A Passion For Speed by Frederic Brun chronicles the actor and racer’s fascination and love for horsepower, through a splendid photographic set.
One of favorite Steve McQueen movies and perhaps the one that is most well-known is Bullitt which featured a 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback, but McQueen’s love for all automobiles and motorcycles left the set with him and travelled with him into the world of off-road racing.
He competed in the Baja 100, Mint 400, and Elsinore Grand Prix, as well as the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1970.
To keep himself as well-oiled a machine as the ones he piloted, McQueen was an avid athlete with a love for weight lifting, running, and martial arts. He was obviously a man who took his passion very seriously and integrated it into his daily life.
"Speed was at the heart of the McQueen mystique, a crucial dimension as the 'King of Cool'," Brun wrote in the introduction, "Speed raced him past other stars and defined his career".
