When the automobile, recently invented, was knocking timidly on the doors of its future, Abruzzo, the 'strong and gentle' region, began to race at breakneck speed.
Even before the creation of the Automobile Club Abruzzo in 1924, the names of De Sterlich, Spinozzi and Ponno had already made the headlines of national motorsport.
Towards the end of the 1930s, together with that entire Abruzzese generation of heroic drivers, pioneers of motorsport, there was Vincenzo Trifoni, 'Il Libico' of Giulianova, who, despite having been an absolute protagonist in Tripolitania and also in Abruzzo, fell into oblivion in motorsport historiography.
During the colonial adventure in Tripolitania, historically known as the attempt to recover 'the abandoned lands', the Giulianova driver invested his life and work, promoting one of the largest farms in the area.
But his passion for cars and speed, anticipated precisely by his knowledge of the sport in his youth years in Giulianova and Abruzzo, would lead him to compete with characters who made the history of world motor racing: among them, Giovanni Lurani Cernuschi.
It was the time when there were only "caravan roads" in Tripolitania, but this did not prevent him from driving them at terrific speed, first in a Lancia Lambda and then in an Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Sport. Trifoni won the 1928 edition of the Tunis-Tripoli raid, a regularity race of 760 kilometres; he also excelled in the next two editions but, without the chronometric support, he only managed a second and a third place overall.
Three podiums in three races: a record. And when he put his mark of "great handling" on the first edition of the Teramo - Civitella del Tronto uphill race, the experts began to notice him.
