The AVUS (Automobil Verkehrs und Übungs-Straße, Traffic (V) and Testing (U) Road) was the first motorway to be built and at the same time the first to be opened to traffic in Europe (while for others the record goes to the Lakes Motorway, opened in 1924), today part of the German A 115 motorway.
From 1921 until 1998 it was also a motor racing circuit, with temporary closure to traffic, and thus a crossroads of great passions and memorable feats.
Where hundreds of thousands of people watched the races, between the radio tower and Grunewald, and famous drivers in Mercedes-Benz, Bugatti, Ferrari and Porsche conquered victories, acclaimed as heroes of yesteryear.
The 'Great Lady' of the roads is now a century old. A lot has happened in that time: culturally, sportingly and technologically.
To mark this anniversary, the present volume brings together 100 compelling stories of personalities, cars, destinies and anecdotes.
