If you had to narrow down the shortlist of the most significant motorbikes of the last century to just ten models, there is no doubt that the Ducati 916 would be part of it, and with all honours.
It was born in the 1990s, designed by the golden hands of Massimo Tamburini, and immediately became, from its launch at the Milan Motor Show in 1993, an instant classic capable of making many enthusiasts dream.
The engine had been seen before, mounted on Ducati's 851/888 series, but compared to these already fabulous superbikes, the new 916 takes a ten-year leap forward with an entirely new design.
The chassis is completely revised, the dress is tight, the headlight is narrow and split, the exhausts are placed under the tail, the swingarm becomes single-sided: everything conspires to make sportsmen throb.
A bike of this beauty could be forgiven any fault, instead it is born perfect. As if that were not enough, it proves to be extraordinarily successful on the track, conquering a fabulous number of victories in the Superbike World Championship.
