Porsche 917: when most motorsport fans think of this car, the first thing that comes to mind is 1970. The first time Porsche won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the breakthrough for the brand. Hans Hermann, a racing legend, was at the wheel. However, Porsche celebrated the first victory of a 917 as early as 1969.

Kurt Ahrens jr. was the name of the now almost unknown driver who was the first to tame the beast. Together with Joseph Siffert, he beat everyone in the Zeltweg 1000 kilometres race.

On weekdays, he sat in the scrap bagger, on weekends he duelled with Jochen Rindt, Graham Hill and Jacky Ickx. Often even victorious. With his great feeling for the car he could have written racing history. But Kurt Ahrens jr. never wanted to drive for money.

Journalist and motorsport expert Eckhard Schimpf has known the brilliant amateur for 65 years. Now he traces the success story of the Porsche works driver: from his beginnings in Formula Three to his only Formula One start at the Nürburgring and his retirement from motorsport at the age of only thirty.
