Rich, eclectic and sporty, Dr Gabriel Espanet soon preferred to compete in motorbike races rather than practise his profession as a surgeon.
At the same time, he discovered aviation, then in its beginnings. Encouraged by Edouard Nieuport, he learned to fly and quickly became an instructor, successfully participating in several international competitions, including the Schneider seaplane trophies.
His discovery of Rembrandt Bugatti's sculptures led him to meet Ettore, with whom he became friends.
This friendship with Ettore Bugatti led him to leave the front line in 1917 to take responsibility for the "Bugatti Mission" in the United States, where he was involved in adapting the U-engine to industrial production for a fleet of LUSAC bomber aircraft.
He then participated in the flight tests of the aircraft, but the armistice froze the development of the project.
On his return to Europe, he began trading in luxury cars, including Bugatti. He remained in close contact with Ettore Bugatti, both physically and by letter, until the latter's death in 1947.
