With the advent of the motorbike, the thrill of high speed on the road was for the first time a reality; from the beginning this vehicle was affordable for everyone, and its fascination has never declined.

The author, Peter Carrick, in this publication dating to 1969, has been able to offer us a complete history of the motorbike sport, from the uncertain beginnings on experimental machines to real competitions, to the more modern (at that time) bolides capable of reaching terrifying speeds.

With a colourful text, full of facts and anecdotes, completed by 260 photographs, often previously unpublished, of sportsmen, champions and machines, the most important events in the sport over almost three quarters of a century are mentioned, as well as the names, types of machines and the most important circuits.

Le grandi moto da competizione offers a comprehensive overview of the different phases in the development of the motorbike sport: the early rallies, when long distances compromised the success of the race by ending in chaos, the exciting personal duels, like when Jake de Rosier crossed America to measure himself against Harry Collier in Canning Town.

And again, the exciting rivalry between manufacturers in the 1920s; the beginnings of the Tourist Trophy and Grand Prix; the dominance of Italians and Germans; the renewed rivalry between manufacturers after 1945 and the reappearance of great protagonists like Agostini, Hailwood and Redman.

Every aspect of motorbike sport is carefully considered and extensively illustrated. From start to finish, there is enough in this fascinating book to interest both layman and expert.
